Pigmentation and Sun Damage

The body contains a pigment, melanin, which determines the colour of the skin. Therefore, people with darker skin tend to have more melanin in their skin cells than those with lighter skin.

When the skin cells are healthy, the skin will appear normal and even. However, when skin cells become damaged and/or unhealthy, extra melanin is produced to help protect the skin. These darker patches are medically known as hyperpigmentation.

How does IPL help with pigmentation/sun damage?

At Aspen, we use Lynton medical-grade lasers to treat these problematic skin conditions with fabulous results in just a few treatments. Using a special IPL filter crystal, we can directly target the area. The light energy will release short pulses of filtered light that are absorbed by the increased pigmentation area ie: freckles, age spots, and brown sun damage causing the pigmentation to darken immediately and this will continue over the next couple of days as the excess pigment is brought to the surface - after 7-10 days the pigmentation will gently flake off revealing clearer, brighter skin.

FAQ’S

How will my skin feel following IPL for pigmentation treatment?

After treatment, your skin may appear slightly red. Any hyperpigmentation that you currently have will begin to darken and eventually take on the appearance and feel of coffee grounds, which will naturally slough off your face in 7-10 days.

How long does pigmentation take to fade following treatment?

7-14 days

How often can I get treatment for pigmentation?

Can you see results after just one treatment?

Does it Hurt?

It is not painful but can be slightly uncomfortable. However, the treatment pulse is rapid, and immediately following treatment, you will most likely feel a slight warmth and tingling sensation, which is not uncomfortable at all. And the results are so worth it!! Your skin will look much fresher, brighter, and more youthful—what’s not to love?!

Pre-care

Do not fake tan. Avoid using creams that contain Vitamin A for several days before and after treatment. Always wear a high-factor sun cream with SPF 30 and above.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on person to person; however, you will see a difference several days after the first treatment, and your skin will look smoother and more youthful.

Aftercare

Aloe vera gel cools, soothes, and hydrates the skin following treatment. It is recommended that you apply aloe vera for several days after treatment.
