How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
Firstly, the area to be treated is cleaned and dried to remove any traces of oils in preparation for the laser.
When the pigment is hit with the laser beam the pigment molecules in the tattoo will shatter and split becoming much smaller enabling the white blood cells to encapsulate them before being carried to the liver through the lymphatic channels.
The laser heats the pigment particles quickly - each pulse takes only a picosecond.
Laser tattoo removal is very targeted. The beam is extremely small but concentrated, which makes treatment easier and more effective.
You will be able to see the tattoo beginning to diminish in colour from the first session, however, the number of sessions you require will be determined by the following:
Colour
Size
Density of the tattoo
Type of ink used
Whether the tattoo was applied by a professional or amateur.
Immediately following tattoo removal “frosting” will appear which can take from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours to disappear- this is a completely normal reaction to the treatment.
(Frosting is temporary - it is a shockwave which happens at particle levels as the body starts to process the breakdown of the ink).
How Long Does Laser Tattoo Removal Take?
The duration of the treatment depends on the size and colour of the tattoo.
The number of treatments is also dependent on the above and on the speed at which the individual’s immune system responds to expelling the body of ink following each treatment.
Tattoo removal will normally take between 10-15 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart
It is very common for the tattoo to be considerably diminished in colour immediately following the session only for it to appear to come back darker - this happens as the ink, which has been broken down, moves nearer to the surface.
However, during the weeks between treatments, the tattoo will start to fade gradually and there will be a noticeable difference before the next session.
As a guide only -Tattoo fade will normally take 6-7 sessions, spaced 5-7 weeks apart.
Laser tattoo removal is the only clinically proven method of removing a tattoo without causing scarring.

Clinically-Tested Tattoo Removal Lasers
The Zeolight Nd: YAG laser is specifically designed to produce picosecond pulses of precise wavelengths of light energy to safely break down tattoo ink without leaving trauma to the skin.
Nd:YAG lasers have been clinically tested at the highest levels and are proven to target certain ink colours (different application heads can be used on specific colours) safely and effectively without causing damage to the underlying or surrounding skin areas.
The greater the absorption of the laser energy the faster the pigment will break down.
Since dark colours absorb more energy than lighter colours they are cleared at at a faster rate.
Lighter colours such as yellow, light green and light blue will potentially take longer.
What To Expect
Tattoo removal is a sequential process, therefore, following the first treatment there may appear to be little difference. The tattoo will, however, fade as the treatment progresses.

You can use a numbing cream or cooling gel, although this will need to be applied 1 hour before treatment to be fully effective.

Does tattoo removal hurt?
It depends on your pain threshold- clients say that it feels like a snapping of an elastic band against the skin.
How many sessions will I require?
This depends on many things such as :

How soon after getting a tattoo can I get it removed?
Before tattoo removal can begin the skin must be fully healed -usually 8-12 weeks - the skin must be fully healed otherwise scarring can occur.
How long after tattoo removal can I shower?
Virtually straight away as long as the water is not too hot a bath is not advised
Why do I have to wait 5 weeks between treatments?
The laser will break down the pigment in the skin layers and in the weeks to follow the body will process a small amount of ink after the treatment and eliminate it from the body
What is the best aftercare following laser tattoo removal?
You can remove the bandage after 24 hours but make sure to keep the area clean and dry-you may also apply Vaseline.
Vitamin E ointment will also help to heal the skin.
How do I know if tattoo removal is working?
Immediately following tattoo removal the skin will turn white and appear lighter on the skin. This is temporary and is due to the release of carbon dioxide from the skin and is a good sign that your skin absorbed the laser well. Your tattoo will look like it did after a few hours following treatment,ment but in between appointments each time will gradually look lighter.
